Knoxville Personal Injury Lawyer G. Turner Howard Discusses New Technology Designed to Help Avoid Traffic Accidents

March 2, 2013

Knoxville car accident attorney G. Turner Howard weighs in on new mobile application available to drivers through the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Knoxville, Tennessee (PRWEB) March 02, 2013

Knoxville personal injury lawyer G. Turner Howard III today said a new mobile phone application could lead to fewer accidents and injuries, as the “app” allows drivers to access the latest information on Tennessee highway traffic, accidents, road conditions, construction zones, roadside cameras and dynamic message sign displays.

According to a January 25 announcement by the Tennessee DOT, more than 35,000 users have downloaded the SmartWay Mobile App since it was launched at the end of December. The transportation department says that the app was created to assist drivers in navigating Tennessee highways more safely and is available at no charge for download in the Play Store for Android and Apple App Store.

Knoxville car accident attorney Howard sees the TDOT SmartWay App as a useful tool for drivers who wish to avoid traffic back-ups due to car crashes, semi-truck collisions, road construction, detours and other traffic delays. “The new traffic app can be useful in the same way radio traffic reports help Knoxville, Tennessee drivers to steer clear of highway accidents on Interstate 275, I-75 and I-40, making their morning or afternoon commuting safer,” Howard said. “The app can inform drivers of dangerous accident scenes so they can avoid those areas. Very often, all the rubber-necking by drivers passing by car crashes can result in rear-end collisions. If this app helps reduce auto accidents on top of making rush hour commutes easier, that´s certainly a good thing.”

The TDOT announcement makes a point of reminding drivers to use the TDOT SmartWay App carefully and responsibly. It encourages drivers to check traffic conditions before heading toward their destination, using its motto “Know before you go!” and urges motorists to never tweet, use any mobile device or text behind the wheel.

Howard emphasizes this latter point. “It is vital for drivers to understand that the TDOT´s SmartWay app should only be used by drivers when the car engine is not running or by automobile passengers helping to navigate the best route during a trip,” Howard said. “Cell phone use behind the wheel and texting drivers already cause enough distracted driving accidents on Knoxville roads and highways, and this new traffic app is not intended to distract drivers in any way.”
