Urology Austin Sees Spike in Vasectomies during March Madness
Men undergo vasectomy procedures during the popular basketball tournament because they have the perfect excuse to be couch potatoes
Austin, TX (PRWEB) March 12, 2013
March Madness is around the corner and with that comes brackets, basketball and“¦vasectomies. It may sound strange, but every year around this time urologists see a surge in vasectomy procedures.
“There are certain times of the year when some men have the ultimate excuse to lay around on the couch and watch TV, said Floyd. “March Madness is definitely one of them. The Masters golf tournament is another.”
Vasectomies are a simple, safe and permanent form of family planning for men. During a traditional procedure, the vas deferens is cut and closed off from each testicle to prevent the release of sperm. Physicians perform the surgery in less than an hour and it is done on an outpatient basis.

Recovery time is typically two to four days and men are advised to rest with their feet elevated. This presents an ideal time to take advantage of one of the biggest sporting tournaments of the year.
“Many of my patients admit to holding off on having their vasectomy procedure until March Madness,” explained Carl Bischoff, M.D., a urologist with Urology Austin. “We also perform no scalpel vasectomies, so the procedure is associated with minimal pain and recovery times are much faster than traditional procedures.”
With a no-scalpel vasectomy, a puncture incision is made in the skin with special forceps. Advantages of this technique include faster operating time, minimal postoperative pain and a decreased risk of bleeding and infection.
While many urology practices around the country promote vasectomies during March Madness with discounts, fun giveaways and promotions, Bischoff cautions that it is still a permanent procedure and men should take it seriously.
