Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck stems are used with multi-piece hip components that typically employ a ceramic on plastic bearing surface. According to a report from Reuters, the Stryker hip implant recall was announced in July 2012, after postmarket data indicated the Rejuvenate and ABG II hip stems are prone to corrosion and fretting when the metal components rub together. If the Rejuvenate and ABG II hip stems fret or corrode, small particles of metal may be shed into patients´ tissue and blood stream, leading to adverse local tissue reactions, pain, swelling and metallosis. Such a reaction could result in soft tissue necrosis, muscle injury, pseudotumor formation and premature failure of the hip implant. The Stryker hip replacement recall involved 20,000 Rejuvenate hip stems, and is expected to cost the company $390 million, Reuters said.

According to Stryker´s recall notice, patients with the recalled hip components should seek the advice of their surgeons if they experience unexplained swelling or pain at the joint where their hip replacement surgery was performed. In a recall update posted on its website in January 2013, Stryker advised all patients with the recalled Rejuvenate and ABG II hip stems to undergo blood and imaging screening even if they are not experiencing any symptoms, as some patients have been found to have high levels of metal ions in their blood, and/or adverse tissue reactions even though they experienced no signs or symptoms of hip implant failure.
