Frequently Asked Questions on Defined Contribution for Employees.

Park City, UT (PRWEB) March 23, 2013

Today, Zane Benefits, Inc. published a new guide on HRAs for employees. Zane Benefits, which provides comprehensive and flexible alternatives to traditional employer sponsored health benefits, is the leader in defined contribution and health reimbursement arrangements.

According to Zane Benefits´ website, employees enrolled in a health reimbursement account may have questions about how defined contribution health benefits work. Zane Benefits website provides a list of frequently asked questions for employees.

What types of expenses can employees submit for reimbursement through an HRA?

According to Zane Benefits´ website, medical expenses are reimbursable through an HRA if it is considered to be a qualified medical expense by the IRS, including premiums for personal health insurance policies. Within the IRS rules, employers may restrict the list of reimbursable expenses in any way they choose. For more information, see IRS Publication 502.

What are the tax benefits of my HRA?

According to Zane Benefits´ website, HRA reimbursements are tax-free. Meaning, the HRA reimbursements received are not subject to income or payroll tax withholdings. Participants do not need to report HRA reimbursements as income.

Does my HRA balance carry forward year to year?

According to Zane Benefits´ website, it depends how the employer has set up the HRA. Balances may roll forward from year to year unlimitedly, at a capped (maximum) amount, or not at all (“use it or lose it”).

Can I submit claims that exceed my HRA balance?

According to Zane Benefits´ website, yes. A good HRA software will track and carry-forward unpaid balances until adequate funds have accumulated. If an eligible expense will exceed a Participant’s available balance, they may submit the claim immediately instead of waiting until sufficient HRA funds accumulate. The approved claim is paid off as allowances accrue. Participants would continue to receive partial reimbursements until the entire claim has been reimbursed.
