Carson-Dellosa Helps Parents Prevent Summer Learning Loss

Survey finds teachers spend first month of school re-teaching lost skills.

The mention of summer break elicits squeals of delight from school children, teachers and many parents who are looking for relief from endless amounts of homework, tests and projects. However, a recent study of over 900 teachers and parents by Carson-Dellosa Publishing finds it is imperative that learning not take a break completely.

“Students quickly get out of the practice of learning,” said Al Greco, CEO, Carson-Dellosa. “Imagine, if you work out daily for nine months and then stop for three months — how much harder it is to get back in shape. It is the same with children and learning. Unfortunately, for many students, summer learning loss can really set them back academically.”

The short-term impact of summer learning loss is felt right at the beginning of the new school year. The Carson-Dellosa study revealed 85% of teachers spend two weeks or more at the beginning of the school year re-teaching critical skills forgotten from the previous year and more than half of these teachers will spend a month reviewing skills. With more pressure on teachers to improve test scores, and in most states, implement the new Common Core State Standards, they need to maximize every minute of classroom time. Those weeks spent re-teaching forgotten skills could be better spent on grade-level curriculum.

But for many children, especially those already struggling, summer learning loss can add up to long-term academic setbacks. Studies show that students can lose up to two and a half months of learning over the summer, with the most significant losses occurring in essential math and spelling skills. In addition, summer learning loss can add up to staggering effects later in a student´s academic career. Certain studies indicate that by sixth grade, students who experienced summer learning loss at the elementary level could be up to two years behind their peers.

The Carson-Dellosa summer learning study also revealed an interesting gap: About 70 percent of the 511 parents surveyed had never even heard of ℠summer learning loss.´ Further, among the minority of parents who were familiar with ℠summer learning loss,´ only about half of those expressed any concern. Contrast that with the 90 percent of teachers who say they are concerned about summer learning loss.

“This is not to blame anyone, but rather to recognize the opportunity to start a conversation among teachers and parents on this issue. In the end, 75 percent of the parents in our study said they wish schools would provide more information to help them prevent summer learning loss,” said Greco. “We hope this study helps to facilitate that conversation and gives teachers and parents new ideas and resources they can use.”
