Edgenuity Launches New Suite of Courses Tailored for Middle School
Tablet-Ready Courses Available for 2013-2014 School Year
Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) April 23, 2013
Edgenuity, a leading provider of online and blended learning solutions, today announced a new set of middle school courses specifically designed to prepare middle school students for academic and career success. Available this summer for the 2013-2014 school year, the new offering includes Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) courses that support the instructional shifts required by the adoption of Common Core State Standards, which emphasize an increased focus on problem-solving and analysis. The Career Explorations course, also part of the new suite, helps students consider potential careers so they can — with intent — choose the most appropriate academic path to reach their goal.
“Middle school is a pivotal period for most students, and a time when it can be difficult for students to catch up if they fall behind,” said Sari Factor, CEO of Edgenuity. “This is why we´ve redesigned our middle school curriculum to help students become more engaged in learning through interactive features, graphics, virtual labs and simulations that bring content to life. Along with our new Career Explorations course, which enables students to investigate their career interests early on, this new suite of courses helps ensure students are preparing to meet the challenge of career and college readiness.”
The Math and ELA courses, designed for students in grades 6-8, promote subject mastery with new assignment types and tools for students. For example, students respond to open-ended questions and compare their work to model answers so they can assess their own work. All courses include rigorous, interactive tasks and assessments and a variety of robust assignments and projects to ensure student understanding.
- Mathematics – With attention to conceptual development, procedural fluency, and application, the new Math courses teach fewer topics at each grade level, allowing students to go into each topic with more depth. On-screen teachers use multiple representations of mathematical concepts to encourage greater student understanding, including diagrams, graphs and tables, verbal expressions, and symbolic notation. Connections are made between topics and across grades, providing a strong foundation for high school algebra. A “Common Misconceptions” feature also helps students pay special attention to concepts that middle school students commonly find challenging, such as ratios.
- English Language Arts – New ELA courses are designed to build content knowledge through nonfiction readings and support reading, writing, and speaking activities grounded in text-based evidence. In addition, a strong emphasis is placed on academic and content-area vocabulary development. To support readers of all levels, the Edgenuity CloseReaderTM provides a host of tools –including text-based and audio commentary, embedded comprehension questions, highlighting and text annotation tools, word look-up, read-aloud, and translation into 17 different languages.
- Career Explorations – The new Career Explorations course helps middle school students make informed decisions and develop plans around their future academic and career goals. Students can assess their own skills and interests and are exposed to the 16 Career Clusters through direct instruction, interactive skills demonstrations, and practice assignments.
