South Korean consumer electronics giant LG has just thrown the TV industry a curve ball. The company is now accepting pre-orders for its new 55-inch Curved OLED TV, Model 55EA9800. Deliveries of the set, which was debuted in the United States in January at the 2013 CES, will begin shipping next month.

More than 1,400 LG retail stores in South Korea began taking orders for the set on Monday.

For now the set will be limited to the Korean market, but availability and pricing is expected to be announced for other Asian markets soon, and that should be followed with a worldwide release. To date LG is the only company to introduce a curved OLED set.

“Our Curved OLED TV is not only the proof of LG´s unmatched leadership in next-generation displays but also a testament to LG´s commitment to bringing to market the most exciting TV technology available today,” Havis Kwon, president and CEO of LG´s Home Entertainment Company, said in a statement.

OLED made a strong show at this year´s CES with new offerings from LG, as well as rivals Samsung and Sony, the latter of which unveiled a “4K” — also known as Ultra-HD — TV that will have four times the resolution of the current generation of HDTV.

LG´s 55EA9800 Curved OLED TV isn´t upping the resolution however, so this will still feature the same resolution (1,920×1,080) resolution of current Full HDTV sets, but this new 55-inch set is indeed designed to provide an “IMAX-like” viewing experience in the home.

It comes as the result of more than five years of research that led to this technology´s development as LG engineers worked to create what it sees to be the “optimum curvature,” which puts the entire screen surface at equidistance from the viewer´s eyes. This is to eliminate the problem of screen-edge visual distortion and loss of detail that can occur, especially in larger screen sizes.

The set not only promises to be curved but it will be thin as well, measuring only 0.17 inches thin and weighing just 37.48 pounds. The set further utilizes LG´s proprietary WRGB technology, a Four-Color Pixel system that features white sub-pixels that work in conjunction with the conventional red, blue and green setup to create more vivid colors.

This set further offers an infinite contrast ratio that can maintain optimal contrast levels regardless of the ambient brightness in the room or the viewing angle. It also features a narrow screen bezel to help create a more immersing experience with both 2D and 3D content. LG´s Curved OLED TV further offers thin transparent film speakers that are placed in the set´s crystal clear stand to provide high-quality sound without compromising the aesthetics of this unique design.

While the set is thin its cost could throw many would-be buyers for another curve. It is available now in South Korea for pre-order for $13,500 US.

LG´s Curved OLED TV also took the top “red dot: best of the best” honor at the prestigious design competition earlier this year.
