According to One Green Planet, a new study published in the March issue of the Journal of Hunger and Environmental Nutrition, concluded that participants who took part in the 34-week study saved almost $40 a week by following plant-based Mediterranean recipes given to them by instructors.

Additionally, a total of 83 participants took part in the study of which roughly half of the participants lost weight. The participants were taken from emergency food pantries and low-income housing sites.

Because meat, poultry and seafood are often the most expensive items of food, consuming a plant-based diet helped the participants save money. As an added benefit, the plant-based diet also improved the health of many of the participants.
