Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) May 06, 2013

Tech analyst Jeff Kagan offers congratulations to LG becoming the number-3 smartphone maker by sales. Kagan offers comment.

“Any way you slice it, this is a big deal for LG. Now the question is if they can hang on to this number three position. Apple and Google Android hold the number one and two positions in operating systems. Apple and Samsung hold number one and two in the smartphone handset side. LG is number three behind Apple and Samsung on the handset side,” says Principal analyst Jeff Kagan.

Six years ago, the smartphone sector changed. Before then Blackberry and Nokia led. Then Apple, Google and Samsung quickly changed the smartphone industry. They seem to have a lock on number one and two.

“However as we all know, there is no such thing as a lock. Anything can happen. Remember, Blackberry was number one in smartphones for more than a decade, then quickly dropped when Apple and Google entered the market,” says analyst Jeff Kagan.

“However Apple, Google and Samsung have a seemingly firm lock on number one and two for now. So, the big batter we are all watching is for Number 3. Who will capture and win number three? The battle is between HTC, Blackberry, Nokia with Microsoft Windows Phone, Huawei, Lenovo, Sony, Motorola and ZTE along with LG,” says Kagan.

“I don´t see LG or any single handset maker keeping the number three position on an ongoing basis. So many fierce competitors have their mouths watering trying to sink their teeth into this space. I get the sense that we will see several handset makers battling for this position over the next couple years. Expect the leadership position to change time and time again for a while at least,” says Kagan.

“So, congratulations to LG on winning the number three position. LG seems to have painted a target on the back of Samsung Galaxy S4. The battle for number three is just beginning. This should be an exciting time in the competitive marketplace. The race is on,” says Kagan.
