LUMEO, the new social learning community that takes the primetime TV approach to education, today announces its launch out of beta to enable students to take online courses that are as engaging as watching TV shows and movies.

Starting today, LUMEO offers courses in photography with TV-quality production value. Drawing on his experience as an editor on The Voice, Shark Tank and more than 20 other TV shows, LUMEO founder Brian McDonough has applied the techniques of non-linear editing — from montage and transitions to multiple cameras and voiceovers — to dramatically improve the storytelling and engagement of online learning.

“Characters are emotional vehicles for learning and remembering. For example, most people know more about a character on TV than they do members of their family. LUMEO uses story and character to teach complex subjects and believe that non-linear editing can make online learning just as memorable as watching TV,” said LUMEO founder Brian McDonough. “With LUMEO, we are following in the footsteps of masterful storytellers like Ken Burns and Schoolhouse Rock, who seamlessly combine learning and storytelling to engage their audience.”

One of the first courses offered on LUMEO is Learn Surf Photography From a Legend, taught by Art Brewer, a surf photographer for more than four decades whose work has appeared in Rolling Stone, Esquire, GQ, Surfer magazine and other publications.

To supplement the course material on LUMEO, members can connect with the community by engaging with social features, soliciting peer reviews and submitting course requests that other members can comment on. LUMEO can deliver new courses based on student requests in a matter of days.

LUMEO currently features beginner, intermediate and advanced courses in photography and film. Enrollment starts at $9 per month for all beginner and intermediate courses, and advanced courses cost $79. LUMEO will soon add content in additional areas such as Business and Film & TV.

At launch, LUMEO is also offering an affiliate program that gives $5 per subscriber to affiliate members who send traffic to LUMEO. Interested affiliates can sign up and contact LUMEO at http://www.lumeo.com.
