On May 17, Colle Farmers Market, an organic farmers market, issues a response to an article published by the Philippine Information Agency, which details how organic farming could be beneficial to eggplant farmers.

According to the article published by the Philippine Information Agency, many eggplant farmers in the Philippines dip their produce in chemicals to make them look more appealing. In the city of Carcar, this practice is common for eggplant farmers. The article says the chemicals make the eggplants look “healthy” and farmers think that it will bring them more income.

However, one veteran eggplant farmer, Marino Quisa-ot, opted out of using harsh chemicals because it cost too much to purchase. After attending an organic eggplant demonstration coordinated by the Department of Agriculture, Quisa-ot began to implement chemical-free farming practices into his business. He used organic fertilizers and increased his income by 33 percent.

A representative from organic farmers market, Colle Farmers Market, says sometimes organic practices can actually be more beneficial than traditional practices. “In the Philippines, it makes more sense to use organic fertilizer and halt chemical use to produce better food and preserve the land,” the rep says. “It´s easy to obtain organic fertilizer and other products that organically promote the health of eggplants. It´s cheaper than using chemicals and safer for the environment. By switching to an organic system, farmers can improve the condition of the soil and produce better eggplants.”

The Colle rep says it´s important for governments to educate farmers on the health and environmental advantages of using organic farming practices. “Because Quisa-ot attended the governmentally-sponsored demo, he was able to greatly increase his income and positively change his farming techniques,” the rep says. “The education he received at the demo changed his life and improved his business. More governments need to host similar events to raise awareness and promote the economical, environmental and health benefits of organic farming.”

Colle Farmers Market is an E-Commerce enabled farmers market community that is passionate about sustainable consumption and responsible conservation. The Colle movement is dedicated to connecting natural product vendors, organic farmers and all people who are living an organic and natural lifestyle.
