Tech Analyst Jeff Kagan on DISH Network Wanting LightSquared Wireless Spectrum
What will DISH Network become next? Technology Industry Analyst Jeff Kagan is available to speak with reporters, or may be quoted through this release.
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) May 24, 2013
Charlie Ergen, Chairman of DISH Network, wants to acquire Lightsquared wireless spectrum according to Bloomberg on May 21, 2013.
Principal analyst Jeff Kagan offers comment on this story.
“Lightsquared was a great idea. It was going to solve a growing problem of limited wireless spectrum for large and small carriers. The problem was the particular spectrum that Lightsquared had interfered with other spectrum assigned to industries like GPS and navigation. So even though this is a great idea and the need is real and growing, this particular spectrum meant LightSquared struck-out even before it got up to bat,” says wireless analyst Jeff Kagan.
“Now Charlie Ergen of DISH Network enters the picture. DISH is getting very involved with the acquisition of various properties that can both expand and change what they do. DISH Networks looks like it intends to grow beyond satellite TV,” says Technology analyst Jeff Kagan.
“DISH is currently also in a battle with Softbank to acquire Sprint Nextel and Clearwire spectrum. That leads me to believe DISH is just getting started. I think we can expect to see DISH making several more moves and we should expect to see some major changes as the company transforms over the next few years if Ergen wins these battles,” says Jeff Kagan.
“We don´t yet know what Dish Network will look like when the dust settles over the next several years, but one thing is for sure, it will provide much more than just satellite television. It will also offer wireless services, delivering television that way, in addition to potentially operating one of the nations largest wireless carriers. Keep your eyes on DISH Network. Things are going to start getting interesting,” says Kagan.
