Boston, Massachusetts (PRWEB) June 05, 2013

According to Boston.com(Leading Boston bicycle advocates to study how to make city biking safer), advocacy officials for Boston bicyclists have recently announced upcoming studies to further evaluate safety concerns following several bicycle accidents and deaths. Tom Kiley Sr., local bicycle accident attorney and cyclist supporter, believes the studies to be desperately needed and a positive step towards ensuring safe alternative means of transportation.

The recent summit followed the tragic death of a visiting scientist. Kanako Miura, 36, suffered fatal injuries following a collision with a truck driver near Charlesgate West and Beacon Street the previous Sunday. Local bicyclists voiced their concerns. Many of whom were very open with Boston.com. Ren Jender, nearby Brighton resident, regularly rides her bicycle on the same route used by Kanako Miura on the day of her death. “This is the sixth fatality in 12 months — that´s six times as much as previous years,” said Mrs. Jender.

A Boston city-commissioned study found that 1,446 bicycle injuries and deaths occurred between 2010 and 2012. Boston Mayor, Thomas Menino, is reportedly using the data to help decrease the cyclist injury rate by his stated goal of 50 percent. The city report also revealed 22 percent of recent bike accidents being attributed to vehicle passengers opening their car doors directly into the pathways of bicyclists.

Tom Kiley Sr., local Bicycle Collision Attorney, believes the city´s attention to increase cyclist safety to be a positive step towards much-needed improvements.

“It is no secret that the public has begun to truly embrace alternative modes of transportation, but motorists have yet to make a real adjustment to accommodate these changes. Having assisted several bicycle collision victims, we have found the majority of these collisions to be the fault of motor vehicle owners or passengers who are oblivious to the presence of bicyclists. This has to change, and the city has a responsibility to help facilitate this change.

“Although many bicycle accident victims are left with minor injuries, there are several others who suffer catastrophically. We hope that this new focus on local cyclists and their safety will begin a much needed process of public awareness that this city needs to help keep the road safe for bikers,” said Injury Attorney Kiley.
