Spartan Environmental Technologies Supplies Ozone based Advanced Oxidation System to the University of Miami’s Net-Zero Water Dorm Project
Spartan Environmental Technologies, a company based in Beachwood, Ohio, supplied an ozone based advanced oxidation water treatment system, SPARTOX(TM), to the University of Miami´s innovative net-zero dorm water project, part of a four-year project funded by the National Science Foundation.
Beachwood, OH (PRWEB) June 09, 2013
The University of Miami (UM) retrofit Eaton Hall, a 4-bed 4-bath dormitory, making it a low energy, autonomous net-zero water building. Net-zero water (NZW) buildings treat and re-use all wastewater with water treatment systems in the building. Therefore, all the waste from a building´s sinks, laundry, toilets, dishwasher and showers will go into that system and treat the water to potable water quality standards. The students will use the water for everything but drinking and cooking.
The SPARTOX system (http://www.spartanwatertreatment.com/SpartOX-ozone-water-treatment-system.html) is part of the overall treatment for the wastewater to create a net-zero water dorm. The SPARTOX advanced oxidation process uses ozone, peroxide and UV light to remove dissolved organic matter and kill microorganisms in the water. The SPARTOX system integrates the entire process on a single computer controlled skid. This allows for easy installation and operation.
In addition to the main dorm project, UM is also studying social motivations for adoption of NZW technology. In short, how to encourage people to look past the psychological “yuck” factor and realize the many benefits. The principal investigator, Dr. James Englehardt, believes this can be a model for future buildings by reducing energy and water demand while promoting sustainable development.
NZW buildings can alleviate the need to treat the 11 billion pounds of toxic chemicals that are released into the environment each year in the US and save energy used for conveyance and desalination. Spartan is excited to be a part of this innovative research effort.
