New Cheap Apple Device May Be Called iPhone 5C

A picture that emerged on Chinese forum WeiPhone this week suggests Apple is moving forward with the rumored colored iPhones, which could be named "iPhone 5C." The picture, spotted by Apple fans this weekend, shows what could be the packaging for the new colorful iPhone bearing the 5C name.
Though Apple has been absolutely silent about their alleged plans to release its first iPhone in color, the consensus amongst rumor websites and other forums is these phones will also be Apple's first entrance into the lower-cost smartphone market. If Apple follows its typical patterns, the Cupertino, California-based company could release a followup to its latest iPhone 5 this fall, expected to be named the iPhone 5S. The company is widely expected to release a cheaper iPhone in color, though it's not yet known if this will happen in the same event or a separate one. Pictures of purported low cost and colorful iPhones have been emerging on rumor sites for several months now ahead of a possible release.
According to MacRumors, the image that originated on WeiPhone was first spotted by Apple rumor site nowhereelse.fr. It has not yet been confirmed if the picture of the packaging is genuine. The white cases piled in the container appear to be very similar to the packaging Apple has been using for many years now. The shells look as if they could contain the accessories normally packed with an iDevice -- headphones, stickers, manual, etc. -- and house the actual device front and center. Though other pictures of rumored upcoming Apple products have emerged on the WeiPhone forums before, it isn't a site dedicated to Apple rumors. Therefore it's difficult to judge the credibility of these photos based on the website's track record.
Pictures of alleged colored iPhone backs have been circulating the Internet for months, with the latest batch showing five backs in more muted colors than those pictured earlier. Backs in blue, gold, green, grey, and red are shown in these pictures, but not the size of the ports or the placement of the buttons.
News sources have also been claiming Apple will release new, colorful phones by the end of the year.
Last month, Reuters published a report claiming the company will produce an iPhone available in six colors for $99. This report sticks to some familiar ground in recent iPhone rumors, including talks of a new size and the release of a revamped version of the existing iPhone 5.
According to the latest Reuters report, Apple will release the iPhone 5S later this year and it will pack a new fingerprint sensor technology in the home button. It's also expected the rumored iPhone 5S will ship with a faster processor and upgraded camera.
Reuters also claimed that though Apple wants to release two iPhones this year, the rumored colored iPhone could arrive sometime next year at a different price. The colors used in these cheap smartphones could be giving Apple some difficulty, thereby pushing back the release as far back as next year, says Reuters.
According to one source, Apple had planned to begin producing these smartphones in June.
