PepsiCo Chooses Atlantium UV for Russia Plant Expansion
New units make water safer, more energy efficient and lowers costs.

Atlantium Technologies Ltd., leader in UV water treatment for industrial and municipal applications, announced today that the PepsiCo Domodedovo plant has chosen Atlantium Hydro-Optic™ UV once again for water treatment, as part of their plant expansion plan to incorporate a kvas production line. They will be installing four Atlantium units in addition to the four already in use for beverage and water production, that will enable the plant to discontinue the use of chlorine and other chemical biocides for water disinfection.
Kvas is a traditional fermented beverage popular in Eastern Europe made from rye bread, with kvas production very similar to beer production. As in beer production, there are certain microorganisms that threaten product integrity, and it is crucial that the water used not contaminate the process.
One Atlantium unit will be used to disinfect the water used to cool the fermentation, and then to dilute the high gravity kvas for bottling. The other will disinfect and protect the cooling water that cools the kvas itself.
By replacing chemical biocides in cooling water disinfection, Atlantium UV achieves complete disinfection and reduces the corrosion of valuable infrastructure caused by chemicals. Atlantium Medium Pressure UV lamps not only disable harmful microorganisms, but also destroy their repair mechanism so they cannot regenerate later.
“We are very proud that Atlantium was again selected as the best solution for the expanded Domodedova plant,” said Mr. Rotem Arad, Atlantium VP Food & Beverage Business Unit. “It is crucial that the water used for dilution is completely uncontaminated, with no residual taste or odor. Atlantium is field-proven in leading breweries as well as in PepsiCo plants worldwide, and our UV units are far more safe and sustainable than chemicals for doing the job.”
“We have been using Atlantium systems in our Domodedova plant since opening in 2009, and they have been very successful in RO membrane protection and ozone removal,” said Mr. Vanush Alexanyan, PepsiCo Engineering Director for Russia & CIS. “When we set about on our expansion project for kvas production, we naturally included Atlantium in our search for a solution that meets high PepsiCo criteria.”
Atlantium Hydro-Optic UV is based on patented fiber optic principles that recycle UV light for optimized results with lower energy use, and provides uniform dose delivery (proven and validated). Integrated software with real-time monitoring & control adjusts the UV dose so that all the water gets the correct UV dose all the time. The software includes automatic documentation and reporting for tracing disinfection and regulatory compliance.
One of PepsiCo’s largest plants, PepsiCo Domodedovo is a new plant specially designed to incorporate water and energy saving technologies and improve sustainability.
Atlantium Technologies Ltd., founded in 2003, provides highly regulated industries such as dairy, food & beverage, pharmaceutical and aquaculture, as well as municipalities, with UV (ultraviolet) based solutions, taking water biosecurity to levels never before achieved without chemicals. Atlantium's Hydro-Optic system is field proven and validated to the highest regulatory standards including EPA and FDA. The company has an international customer base with installations all over the world. For more information, go to http://www.atlantium.com.
