Atlantium Wins 2013 Beverage Innovations Award
Leader in Sustainable Technology Recognized at Drinktec
Munich, Germany (PRWEB) September 19, 2013
Atlantium Technologies Ltd., leader in UV water treatment for industrial and municipal applications, announced today that it has received the Beverage Innovations Award 2013 in the Sustainable Technology category, for their leadership in making pasteurized equivalent water that replaces heat pasteurization, enabling significant savings in energy and water consumption. Atlantium was chosen from numerous entries from over 40 countries.
Atlantium patented technology leverages fiber optic and hydraulic principles to harness the full power of UV light, effectively recycling photons for better disinfection using much less energy. Integrated software, driven by sophisticated algorithms, track the key variables affecting UV dose in real time, automatically adjusting so that a measured effective UV dose is being delivered all the time. Inspired by Atlantium demonstration projects, US State Regulators and the Food and Drug Administration changed the law in 2009 to allow UV technologies that meet their criteria to substitute for heat to pasteurize water.
Heat pasteurization consumes 150kW per hour, while Atlantium technology uses just 3kW per hour to achieve the same microbial integrity. An example of the scale of savings that can be achieved: one of our customers pasteurizes 60 tons of water a day to reuse in plant processing. The water needs to be totally spore and microbe-free to maintain product safety and shelf life. Today, 80% of their daily consumption of 900m3 of process water is recycled water, and they save 158,000 kW in annual energy consumption.
This distinction follows recognition for the Coca Cola-Atlantium Rainmaker project that won the IWA Project Innovation Award at Singapore International Water Week last year. The project produces high-quality water that meets and/or exceeds drinking water standards for use in non-product activities such as clean-in-place and bottle washing. The innovative system expands the range of manufacturing applications for recovered process water and sets precedent for conservation and reuse in the beverage industry.
“This Atlantium innovation saves water and energy resources,” said Mr. Rotem Arad, Atlantium VP Food & Beverage Business Unit, who received the award on behalf of Atlantium. “Since our CEO Mr. Benjie Kahn, a leading environmentalist and Time Magazine Hero of the Environment, established Atlantium in 2003, we have been focused on technology to make water safe and conserve the world’s precious resources. This recognition confirms that Atlantium is indeed achieving what it set out to do.”
