Google’s Docs, Gmail Apps Experience Service Diruption

While it didn’t mean pacing back and forth by the mail box, on Monday Gmail users did find themselves hitting the refresh key as Google’s email platform was hit by a service disruption. Other services such as Google Docs also experienced outages as the week began.

Google posted Monday on its Apps Status Dashboard that two Google apps services were experiencing a “service disruption.” The disruption affected Gmail and Google Docs, as well as Google Presentations.

Several additional updates were posted by Google to state that the search giant was “continuing to investigate the issue.” At 11:45 a.m. Google stated that “This issue is affecting less than an estimated 0.024 percent of the Gmail user base. Editors and staff at RedOrbit.com were among those who experienced issues with Google mail and Docs. PCMag also reports that “email was not coming in or arriving long after it was sent,” according to the magazine’s Chloe Albanesius.

Email and Docs are part of the Google Apps suite, which competes heavily with Microsoft for enterprise clients.

The service disruption notice was first posted at 10:25 a.m. on the east coast; an hour later an update was issued that “delivery of some messages may be ‘delayed,’ while ‘attachments may fail to download.”

Email messages sent to or from Google Apps accounts, such as enterprise accounts with a company domain name running from Google mail, took longer to receive, and often arrived out of chronological order, adding to confusion as recipients followed-up with senders when they did not get an expected email.

The percentage of users affected by the Google outage spoke loudly on Twitter. “Is Gmail being weird today?” quickly rose to the top of Tweets, PCMag reports. Some users worried that when Google restores mail, it will flood inboxes. “Something tells me gmail is going to get fixed and I’m going to get like 200 emails at once. That won’t make for a complicated Monday!” PCMag quoted another Tweet.

Some Twitter users suggested that the Google shutdown means the shutdown of business for the day. “Gmail’s down, let’s all go ride bikes!” Tweeted @Tim_Stevens. And many users appreciated the downtime awarded by the outage. “I know I’m supposed to be upset by the Gmail outage, but I confess that I’m actually kind of enjoying it. I wish it would go down more.” Tweeted @mathewi.

The number of Tweets suggests that the Google-reported 0.024 percent is a very large number of users, or the outage is larger than Google had reported.

A message posted at 3:00 p.m. EST on Google’s Apps Status Dashboard stated, “Gmail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users within the next 1 hours. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change.”

Even after the 3:00 p.m. update, Tweets continued to fly into news feeds, some even by those unaffected by the service outage.
