Search engines and social networks dominate the online world, with Google leading the way with more people visiting it than any other website, researchers at the Oxford Internet Institute report in a new study.

Using commercial web traffic data obtained from California-based Alexa Internet, Inc., Oxford researchers Dr. Mark Graham and Stefano De Sabbata created a choropleth map that illustrates the most visited web sites in each country. Each color represented each nation’s most viewed website.

“The supremacy of Google and Facebook over any other site on the Web is clearly apparent,” the study authors wrote. “We also see an interesting geographical continuity of these two ‘empires.’ Google is the most visited website in most of Europe, North America, and Oceania. Facebook, in contrast, is the most visited website in most of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as much of the Spanish-speaking Americas.”

The Mountain View, California-based search engine was the overall winner as the most popular website in 62 countries, while the Mark Zuckerberg-founded social network was second as the most-visited website in 50 nations, according to the Daily Mail.

Furthermore, CNET’s Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols reported Friday that Google also finished second in 36 of the 50 countries where Facebook was voted as the top website. The other 14 nations? They had YouTube, which is also owned by Google, as their second-most visited website, Vaughan-Nichols added.

The third place website, China’s Baidu search engine, was recognized as the most popular website in two countries. Furthermore, the Pew Research Center reports that Yahoo! Japan was the most-visited website in both Japan and Taiwan.

Russian search engine Yandex was that country’s number-one website, drawing in approximately 60 percent of that country’s search engine traffic. Social media service VK was the most visited website in Belarus, while email service Mail.ru was reportedly the leader in Kazakhstan.

“The countries where Google is the most visited website account for half of the entire Internet population, with over one billion people,” the researchers said. “Thanks to the large Internet population of China and South Korea, Baidu is second in this rank, as these two countries account for more than half a billion Internet users, whereas the 50 countries where Facebook is the most visited website account for only about 280 million users, placing the social network website in third position.”
