Rochester, NY (PRWEB) October 06, 2013

A campaign against texting and driving that includes the participation of 25 area school districts could save lives, according to James Morris, a lawyer in Buffalo for victims of car accidents and other personal injuries.

The Democrat and Chronicle (“Schools send message to students: Don't text and drive,” August 27) reported in late August that the campaign – called “You Are That Distracting” – will be implemented for the upcoming school year in light of recent concerns that distracted driving is an increasingly serious issue in Rochester and across Western New York.

“With our residents showing more concerns over texting and driving than ever, our law firm applauds this important campaign to raise awareness over the dangers of texting while driving,” said Morris. “As personal injury lawyers, we know very well how devastating texting while driving accidents can be. Unfortunately, many young drivers who lack experience behind the wheel might think it’s no big deal to text and drive. This type of thinking can have tragic consequences, and that’s why educational campaigns in schools are so critical.”

According to the Democrat and Chronicle, survey results from the Ad Council of Rochester, in partnership with Crux Research, Frontier Communications, and other area organizations, suggested that Rochester-area residents text while driving at a higher rate than people in other cities.

As a result, the Democrat and Chronicle reported that this campaign – aimed at high school-aged drivers – would include a “tool kit” that gives school districts a variety of options, including requiring students to take an online course in order to get a parking pass on school grounds. Districts throughout western New York will be raising awareness through morning announcements, school newspapers, and posters throughout schools.

“It’s no secret that texting and driving is a legitimate concern in Rochester and throughout all of western New York State – and rightfully so. When drivers take their eyes off the road for even a split-second, from reading or sending a text message, to checking social media sites, to fiddling with their radio or GPS system, they put themselves and others at risk of serious injury or death,” said Morris, a car accident lawyer in Buffalo. “If someone is injured in an accident, or a loved one is killed, the victims or their families may be entitled to compensation. A personal injury lawyer can help protect their rights and send a message that careless behavior behind the wheel will not be tolerated.”
