City of Hope Sponsors National College Leadership Tour to Promote Healthcare & Biomedical Careers for Hispanics; Partners with Televisa and Center for Hispanic Leadership
In an effort to strengthen the Hispanic pipeline in the healthcare and biomedical industries, City of Hope's sponsorship provides the opportunity for the organization to recruit prime Hispanic candidates.
Duarte, CA (PRWEB) October 17, 2013
As part of its outreach and recruitment efforts to the fast-growing United States Hispanic community, City of Hope, a leading global research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening diseases, is sponsoring a College Leadership Tour across America presented by Televisa Publishing + Digital and featuring Center for Hispanic Leadership.
“There is a relative shortage of Hispanic students pursuing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and careers,” says Center for Hispanic Leadership Founder/CEO Glenn Llopis, the keynote speaker on the tour. “If we want to remain competitive in this global economy, we must start making the sciences an educational priority and connecting the dots between the jobs of the future and the students who will be comprising tomorrow’s workforce.”
With a catchment area that is 48 percent Hispanic, City of Hope is already connecting the dots by partnering with the Duarte Unified School District to offer classroom programs for students K-12; a summer student academy for promising students; and a community teaching lab. “Developing and strengthening the pipeline of Hispanics for healthcare and biomedical professions beginning from elementary school all the way to the graduate level will enable us to support a future workplace that looks more like, and can identify with, the communities that we serve,” says Stephanie Neuvirth, Chief Human Resources and Diversity Officer at City of Hope.
The College Leadership Tour, which will stop on college campuses in California, Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, and Texas, helps connect City of Hope with Hispanic students by providing them with a better understanding of the benefits and requirements for pursuing a career in the healthcare and biomedical fields. For example, after graduating from a four-year college, students can apply to attend City of Hope’s Irell & Manella Graduate School of Biological Sciences, which prepares students to become outstanding research scientists in chemical, molecular, and cellular biology.
“With the increasing number of Latino graduates across the country, it became obvious that a college tour to empower tomorrow’s leaders was necessary in a major bid to recruit Hispanic students to the healthcare industry,” says Madelin Bosakewich, U.S. and International Sales Director for Televisa Publishing + Digital. “Teaming with leading research and treatment center City of Hope was a natural pairing for the tour across America.”
In support of the College Leadership Tour, City of Hope has made a further commitment to Hispanic leadership development by supporting 250 student certifications from the Center for Hispanic Leadership’s online training program, Hispanic Leadership Academy, which will be awarded at each of the tour stop locations.
Adds Llopis, whose organization will present an original thought-leadership forum, Strengthening the Hispanic Pipeline in Healthcare and Biomedical Fields on December 2 at City of Hope, “Whether it’s on a local, national, or global level, it’s clear that City of Hope is transforming the future of health.”
