Phillystran’s Custom Cables Installed in Iconic One World Trade Center
Aramid Fiber and High Performance Tower Guy (HPTG) assemblies top off the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.
Kansas City, MO (PRWEB) October 24, 2013
Phillystran, a WireCo® WorldGroup brand, recently designed, manufactured and supplied 8 aramid fiber (Teijin Twaron) High Performance Tower Guy (HPTG) assemblies each approximately100 feet in length required to support the 400 foot mast atop the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, One World Trade Center. These custom HPTG assemblies were designed to hold up in the most extreme weather conditions with a rated break strength over 1.7 million pounds.
Originally named ‘The Freedom Tower’, design for this iconic structure began in 2003. Phillystran was brought into the project in 2004 to present a proposal for custom non-metallic guy assemblies to support the staggering 400 foot mast that would sit atop of this national landmark. Phillystran, known for its custom manufacturing abilities and 40 years of tower guying projects, was awarded the contract in September of 2012.
Construction of the 8 HPTG guy assemblies, the largest Phillystran tower guys ever assembled, began in the Fall of 2012 and was recently completed in August 2013 taking nearly 48 weeks to complete. This project was a challenge for Phillystran, requiring a specially designed tension monitoring system, and approximately 6 inch diameter HPTG guy assemblies weighing in at nearly 12 pounds per foot, with a breaking strength of over 1.7 million pounds.
“It was a real team effort to accomplish this once-in-a-lifetime project. I am extremely proud of everyone that was involved overcoming all the obstacles that we had in manufacturing a rope this large. It is something we can be proud of as a company and as Americans, for the rest of our lives”, commented Robert Lombardo, Managing Director, Phillystran.
With a team of engineers and consultants, Phillystran traveled to New York City to personally monitor the installation of these custom assemblies from mid-July into early August, 2013. The 400 foot mast takes the One World Trade Center to a height of 1,776 feet, making it the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the third tallest building in the world.
