Technology Business Research, Inc.’s (TBR) Global Delivery Market Landscape has tracked the growth of onshore and offshore resources of the largest IT services firms for three years, and the recent semiannual update shows that, contrary to their traditional multinational competitors, India-based firms increased hiring of onshore resources at 12.9% in 2013. Systems integrators (SIs) — Accenture, Atos, Capgemini, CSC and Xerox Services — as well as SIs with support and maintenance — Dell, HP, IBM and T-Systems — reduced headcount in onshore locations over the same time period.

TBR analysts believe headcount at multinational firms slowed due to a shift in priorities toward revenue expansion in emerging markets and a focus on cloud computing. “IT services vendors are moving beyond the era of labor arbitrage and there is an increased focus on profitability via a reduction in headcount and the emerging use of IP-backed assets and automation,” said Bozhidar Hristov, analyst in the Professional Services practice. “Basically, the nonlinear model will succeed at the expense of revenue expansion.”

However, Indian firms that have typically been fast followers are changing tactics and building consulting capabilities, particularly to deliver high-value engagements and cloud-led solutions in mature onshore markets.

TBR’s research outlines the increasing importance of India-based providers’ investments in automation solutions, which aim to decouple revenue and headcount, increase profitability and ultimately enable further investment in automation tools. In-depth vendor profiles address present and future states of the market by providing detailed SWOT analyses, efficiency metrics and geographic footprints, as well as other detailed data.
