The Siam Paragon massive shopping complex in Bangkok, Thailand was the most Instagrammed location of 2013.
Instagram published its year-end review of the top 10 most Instagrammed places in the world on Friday, showing how Instagram use and travel has changed over the year. Last year, the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok topped the 2012 list, but that location has been bumped to make room for a new number one.
“The Siam Paragon (สยามพารากอน)—a massive shopping complex, movie theater and aquarium in Bangkok—was our top spot, edging out 2012’s most-Instagrammed place, Bangkok’s International Airport,” the company wrote in a blog post.
New York’s Time Square took the number two spot on the list, followed by Disneyland in California. Central Park and The High Line in the Big Apple also proved to be hot spots to Instagram this year, which were both new to the most-popular list.
The Eiffel Tower is one of the most visited places in the world, and last year the landmark landed eight on the list, but this year the Parisian spot didn’t make its way to the top ten list.
“It’s inspiring to see moments shared from all around the world, whether it’s a photo from your hometown or a video from your vacation,” Instagram wrote.
The company said 60 percent of Instagrammers are now sharing photos and videos from outside of the United States. These users come from places like Indonesia, Russia and Brazil. Although five US cities made it to top ten spots on the Most-Instagrammed Cities of 2013, the list proves that Instagram is growing across the globe.
London was the most Instagrammed city in 2013 outside of the US, followed by: São Paulo, Brazil; Moscow, Russia; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. With the FIFA World Cup coming to Brazil next year, Brazil may be making itself even more prominent on the list in 2014.
Instagram added a big update to its service yesterday, allowing users to send photo and video messages to friends. Instagram Direct will allow users to post photos that could be inside jokes they wish to stay amongst certain friends and family. The company created a new icon in the top right corner of its app, where users will find photos and videos people have sent over.
“From how you capture photos and videos to the way you start conversations through likes and comments, we built Instagram Direct to feel natural to the Instagram experience you already know,” the company wrote.
