Selfie has become such a popular term recently that even Apple is acknowledging it by adding a special section to its App Store.

The Cupertino, California-based company added a “Sharing Selfies” category to its App Store so it would be easy for users to find iOS applications created around taking photos of yourself. The category contains 12 different selfie apps that either interface with existing social media networks or operate independently altogether.

One of the more well-known apps that is being featured on the new category is Snapchat, a popular photo messaging app in which users can take photos and record videos to send to a controlled list of recipients. The new App Store category also features the apps SnapDash and Shots.

The term selfie was first created on Flickr in 2004, but it was crowned “Word of the Year” last year by the Oxford English Dictionary.

“It’s that time of the year again. With a fanfare and a drum roll, it’s time to announce the Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year. The votes have been counted and verified and I can exclusively reveal that the winner is…. Selfie,” Oxford Dictionaries wrote in a blog post last year.

Judy Pearsall, editorial director for Oxford Dictionaries, told the BBC at the time that social media sites had helped the dictionary determine selfie as the word of the year.

“Social media sites helped to popularize the term, with the hashtag #selfie appearing on the photo-sharing website Flickr as early as 2004, but usage wasn’t widespread until around 2012, when selfie was being used commonly in mainstream media sources,” Pearsall told the BBC.
