Common Sense Media to Host Second Annual ON for Learning Awards, Celebrating the Best in Kids’ Digital Media

March 20, 2014

Event in San Francisco will recognize app, game, and website developers who are creating high-quality educational content for home and school

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 20, 2014

Tonight Common Sense Media will host the second annual ON for Learning Awards from 6 to 8 p.m. at the San Francisco Cartoon Art Museum. Developers, educators, teachers, and investors will be on hand to recognize the apps, games, and websites that were rated best for learning by Common Sense Media in 2013. This year, 55 products were selected from among the more than 2,000 that have been reviewed by Common Sense Media.

Each winning product was chosen for its ability to enrich kids and teens and to equip them with the skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. Each received a 5-out-of-5 rating from Common Sense Media's team of expert educators and editors, using a unique 15-item research-based rubric that considers engagement and the depth of learning for each subject or skill.

"Common Sense Media's Learning Ratings are the most comprehensive tool parents have to distinguish the digital-media products that are truly educational from those that simply claim to be," said Linda Burch, chief education and strategy officer. "The ON for Learning Award recipients — only five percent of the titles we review — represent everything from an innovative music-composition app to a cultural game to a program that inspires social-emotional learning. We look forward to celebrating with the developers and publishers who are setting the standard for creating high-quality learning products among their peers and improving the media landscape for kids."

Common Sense Media launched the Learning Ratings initiative in 2012 to help parents, caregivers, and educators discover the most engaging digital-learning products that enhance learning and foster the knowledge and skills kids need to thrive in today's 24/7 digital world. It was made possible through a partnership with SCE (http://www.scefdn.com), a foundation from Susan Crown.
