Leading Hollywood security company Andrews International (AI) is protecting film crews on location in Hawaii, the setting of recent blockbuster movies and many upcoming releases. AI is a top contender for film set security contracts in Hawaii, with the advantages of a Honolulu office, expert local managers, and a solid reputation among entertainment industry clients. Over 25 years ago, AI’s first clients were Hollywood studios, and many of those early studio contracts are still in place today. AI founded the industry’s first anti-piracy unit and is now the number one security provider in Hollywood for special events.

For many of Hollywood’s major producers and directors, Hawaii is the backdrop of choice for film production. Robert Jenkins, regional manager for AI’s security operations in Hawaii, cites the example of scenes shot in Hawaii for the 2013 film, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Jenkins recalls overseeing the security service team tasked with preventing security leaks and interruptions from fans clamoring to see the film’s stars.

The set of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is one of many where Jenkins and his team have been called upon to protect box office celebrities. “We often work with big Hollywood names. For example, we just provided security on a Cameron Crowe project starring Emma Stone, Bradley Cooper, and Alec Baldwin. We have years of experience developing the right balance between keeping celebrities safe and preserving an environment conducive to creative performance.”

Jenkins points out that each location has its unique challenges. Operations Manager Cedric Cartajena and his team of eighty security professionals are experienced at orchestrating intricate security operations for sets filmed at locations ranging from military bases with stringent security control and access restrictions, like Pearl Harbor, to locations requiring a round-the-clock perimeter watch, like the sets of the special effects-heavy Godzilla remake.

According to Jenkins, the nature of the work requires security staff to be prepared to adapt swiftly to changes of scenery and environment. “Producers often need to switch locations at a moment’s notice. Recently, we were asked to help clear and shut down the entire downtown area of Waikiki. We executed the task as quickly as possible so that the production team could wrap the scenes, and tourists could get back to enjoying one of the busiest attractions in Hawaii.”

Jenkins recognizes the role of security in helping tourism and film production co-exist peacefully. “For every film produced here – for every scene, every award-winning performance, and all the endless logistics – there are security professionals working diligently behind the scenes to help make the project successful.”
