Fresenius, Baxter and C. R. Bard Drive the U.S. Dialysis Device and Concentrates Market to $2 Billion by 2020 Due to Heat Disinfectant Systems Growth
The shift in preference towards heat disinfectant water treatment systems is one of the main drivers of growth for the U.S. Dialysis Devices and Concentrates Market, reports iData Research
Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) May 22, 2014
iData Research (idataresearch.com), the leading global authority in medical device and pharmaceutical market research, has recently published a report for the U.S. Dialysis Devices and Concentrates Markets. The total market is estimated to reach $2 billion by 2020. The fastest growing segment within this market is the water treatment system, driven by a shift towards heat disinfectant water treatment systems, which is expected to grow to account for nearly 75% of all water treatment systems sold over the forecast period.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in 10 American adults, which is more than 20 million people, suffer from varying levels of chronic kidney disease. In 2013 alone, close to 84 million total dialysis treatments were performed. The number of dialysis treatments is projected to grow to over 110 million by 2020. Dialysis patients receive treatment in one of three ways: in-center hemodialysis, home hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. In-center hemodialysis was the method of treatment for 89.7% of all dialysis patients in 2013. A standard patient that undergoes in-center hemodialysis will undergo an average of approximately 13 treatments per month.
There is an ever expanding demographic of Americans suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD), chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI). The majority of cases reported for ESRD have been most prevalent among the 45-64 age groups, reported by the United States Renal Data System (USRDS). There were 45,790 new cases of the disease in this age group. The lowest reported new cases were among the 0-19 age group at 1,369. Due to this expanding patient population amongst other factors detailed in the report, the total dialysis device and concentrates market will grow to a value of $2 billion over the forecast period.
Water treatment systems comprise the fastest growing market with trends towards more purchases of expensive heat disinfectant systems. Over the next few years, the market for heat disinfectant water treatment systems will grow to reach almost $96 million by 2020. “Chemically disinfected systems have long been the standard for the treatment of water used for dialysis,” says Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO iData Research. “However, stricter regulations and enforcement have increased the need for products that can provide the highest level of quality assurance without demanding frequent servicing and labor hours.” These demands are resulting in increased usage of heat based disinfectant water treatment systems. Although such systems are often much more costly to install initially, their operating costs, reduced labor requirements and quality of water treatment will continue to result in strong market growth.
Fresenius is the leading competitor in the dialysis device and concentrates market. The company achieves their leading position in the market through participating in more dialysis segments than any of its competitors, and the owning and operating of approximately one-third of all dialysis centers in the United States. Other notable competitors with varying market shares are: Baxter, C. R. Bard, Mar Cor, Medcomp, Medivators, Medisystems, Covidien, Asahi, B. Braun, Rockwell and Teleflex Medical. Baxter increased its market share with the acquisition of Gambro in 2012. B. Braun maintains presence in the global dialysis device market as only one of three companies to sell an in-center hemodialysis machine in the U.S.
