AT&T Is a Sure Bet During Breeders’ Cup Racing
AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) has announced that racing fans with wireless service from AT&T can rely on enhanced coverage later this week during the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships. Nearly 50,000 people are expected to attend this year’s 11-race Breeders’ Cup — with a $23 million purse — Oct. 26 and 27 at Monmouth Park in Oceanport.
To accommodate the expected crowds, AT&T has deployed a portable Cell Site on Wheels (COW) at Monmouth Park to beef up wireless coverage and capacity inside the park and along heavily traveled Route 36. COWs are self-contained cell sites that can quickly and easily be brought to a specific location to temporarily boost network capacity and coverage.
The COW will provide enhanced service for the company’s third-generation (3G) broadband network and will allow customers to use their 3G handsets to access voice service and feature-rich wireless content, including video, games, pictures and the latest racing stats from online news services.
“AT&T is a champion thoroughbred in the telecommunications industry,” said Tom DeVito, vice president and general manager for AT&T’s wireless division in New York and New Jersey. “So it’s only fitting that we make our presence felt at the prestigious Breeders’ Cup by providing the very best possible wireless experience to our customers as they watch the nonstop action at Monmouth Park.”
Supplementing existing coverage to accommodate the anticipated increase in wireless usage at this event is part of AT&T’s commitment to providing customers with a superior wireless network experience when and where they need it and want it most. Since 2005, AT&T has invested $1.2 billion on the network, including the addition of 500 new cells in metropolitan New York and New Jersey wireless network. Or put another way, as of the third quarter of 2007, the company has spent an average of $1.1 million per day to enhance the network for its customers.
AT&T technicians monitor the wireless network 24/7 to assess call quality and coverage. Along with a series of independent third-party consultants, the technicians test-drive more than 95,000 miles of highways and byways throughout New Jersey, New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties.
