Expand Networks’ Accelerator 4920 Cited for Superior Performance in Head-to-Head Testing By Network Testing Labs
(MILCOM — Booth #534)–Expand Networks www.expand.com, a leading provider of application acceleration solutions over the wide area network (WAN), and recently positioned in the Gartner’s Leaders Quadrant for WAN Optimization Controllers 2006, today announced that independent testing by Network Testing Labs demonstrated that the Expand Accelerator 4920 delivered the maximum application response and outperformed the Comtech EF Data TurboIP in a head-to-head test. The rigorous testing measured various protocols and data transfer performance of direct relevance to the satellite users and service providers.
Network Testing Labs conducted a series of benchmark tests simulating various types of traffic including FTP, File Sharing, Web pages / HTTP, Web Services / SOAP, database transactions, backup / restore and e-mail. Next, the lab reviewed the data comparing an un-optimized environment against the test run with the Expand and Comtech solutions, respectively. Each of these tests was performed over satellite links of 64 kbps sec; 512 kbps and a full T1 line 1.5Mbps.
One benchmark where Expand exceeded was in Space Communication Protocol Standards (SCPS), a vendor-neutral acceleration protocol that is applied to the Department of Defense’s network. While satellites at times can be as slow as a dial-up service due to latency, the Expand solution was able to create a broadband acceleration effect under their implementation.
“Our tests evaluate for fast performance, support for any and all protocols (including streaming video, routing table updates and even music-sharing protocols), ease of use, scalability, good documentation and trouble-free installation,” said Barry Nance, a well-known network expert who conducted the testing for Network Testing Labs. “The Expand Networks model 4920 Accelerator is clearly the best tool for the job when you want to greatly reduce application response times as well as costs. We found that it efficiently and dramatically accelerates satellite-based traffic via compression, protocol handling and caching. We recommend it wholeheartedly.”
Network Testing Labs engineers also ran a number of hands-on tests in the areas of WAN acceleration and concluded that the Expand Accelerator 4920, when tested against a non-optimized environment, is:
6.2 times faster transferring FTP data
6.5 times faster transferring Web pages (HTTP)
3 times faster with Web services (SOAP)
4.6 times faster in database transactions
8.2 times faster in backup/restore
overall faster than the Comtech EF Data turbo IP
“Expand Networks consistently sets new benchmarks for satellite optimization performance,” said Howard Teicher, Vice President, Public Sector & Satellite Markets Expand Networks, Inc. “Expand’s deployments throughout the US government’s military, satellite and enterprise networks continues to grow. We deliver a robust, solid, scalable product that performs as advertised.”
