NYU Stern Professor to Offer Analysis of Google's OpenSocial Alliance

Posted on: Thursday, 1 November 2007, 12:00 CDT

On November 1, 2007, Google will announce its new alliance, OpenSocial, formed with social network sites such as LinkedIn, Friendster and Ning to establish a common set of standards to allow software developers to create programs for these sites.

Professor Arun Sundararajan, an expert in the economics of information technology and social networks and network effects, questions the extent to which "openness" will benefit users.

He argues:

OpenSocial is a direct attack on Facebook's business model and challenges its ability to justify the $15 billion valuation Microsoft has placed on the site

Although different in scope, Google's announcement is reminiscent of Sun Microsystem's announcement in the 1990s, positioning Java as the platform-independent language that would topple Microsoft yet failed to do so

Differences in the purpose, user composition and platform architecture of the social networks of the alliance partners could limit the ease and benefits of OpenSocial

About Professor Sundararajan

Professor Sundararajan has researched how social networks affect economic outcomes and has published extensively on pricing digital goods, network effects, piracy and digital rights management, how social networks alter economic outcomes, reputation systems, how IT transforms industries and telecom policy in emerging markets.

He is associate editor of Management Science, Information Systems Research and MIS Quarterly, and serves on the advisory board of SSRN's ebusiness/ecommerce journal.
