Solarflare and SMC Networks First to Deliver 10GBASE-T Products for Data Centers and Enterprise Networks
Posted on: Thursday, 8 November 2007, 09:00 CST
Solarflare Communications, the leader in standards-based 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) silicon, and SMC Networks, the company redefining leadership in reliable, robust, standards-based networking solutions for small and medium business (SMB), today announced that SMC Networks will begin shipping 10GBASE-T NICs and switches based on Solarflare® technology starting Q4, 2007. These 10GBASE-T products deliver true 10 Gigabit performance over standard Ethernet links enabling enterprises and data centers to quickly and cost effectively upgrade to the next level of networking. Increasing business and bandwidth demands can finally be easily addressed with the high-speed performance necessary to support advanced applications such as high-definition video streaming, network convergence, Web 2.0 and server virtualization.
"Based on growing customer needs, we understand the importance and value of bringing to market 10GBASE-T technology that works over existing copper infrastructure driving the widespread adoption of 10 Gigabit performance," said Iain Kenney, director of product marketing at SMC Networks. "Solarflare is the right partner to help us meet the increasing demand for standards-based high-performance Ethernet to power advanced business applications and offer viable, cost-effective solutions to other technologies which often require complete network overhauls."
SMC's 10 Gigabit Strategy is more extensive than most vendors today. Incorporating both 10G Fiber and Copper Ethernet Switching and NIC Solutions, SMC aims to drive usability and ROI into this market segment. SMC is introducing a complete range of 10 Gigabit NICs including 10GBASE-T and XFP, a 10GBASE-T switch uplink for SMC switches, and a ground breaking 24 port 10G switch based on Solarflare technology with 20 10GBASE-T ports and 4 XFP ports. SMC will be showcasing Solarflare's wire speed virtualization acceleration over standards-based 10GBASE-T copper solutions in the SMC booth #2403 at Supercomputing 2007, November 12-15 in Reno's Spark's Convention Center.
"With cost-effective, high-performance 10GBASE-T products coming to market, there is no reason not to move to 10 Gigabit performance today to meet ever increasing business demands," said Bruce Tolley, vice president of marketing at Solarflare. "SMC shares our vision of wide-spread 10 Gigabit networking and we are delighted that products from SMC Networks based on our 10 Gigabit Ethernet controller and 10GBASE-T PHY technology will soon be available for deployment throughout data centers and enterprise networks."
About Solarflare 10 Gigabit Products
Solarflare is the first to deliver both 10 Gigabit Ethernet controller and 10GBASE-T PHY technology. The Solarstorm™ Ethernet controller delivers the optimal balance of performance, power and price. Solarflare's 10Xpress® 10GBASE-T PHY supports distances of greater than 100 meters on UTP Category 6A cabling, 100 meters on STP Category 6, 55 meters on UTP Category 6, and 45 meters on UTP Category 5E cabling. The combination of Solarstorm 10GbE controller and 10Xpress 10GBASE-T PHY enables NIC and server OEM customers to bring 10G server adapters to market at about the same cost as quad 1G server adapters--driving the widespread implementation of 10GbE in data centers and enterprise networks.
