Posted on: Monday, 12 November 2007, 09:00 CST

JOPLIN, Mo., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- EaglePicher Technologies, LLC, an EaglePicher company, today announced it has opened a dedicated research and development (R&D) center in Joplin, Mo., to expand its new technology research and enhance existing development efforts. The new technical center employs 15 scientists and engineers and expects to double by mid-2008.

The new R&D center has focused technical resources, both manpower and equipment, dedicated to key research and development activities including engineering designs, battery electrochemistries and affiliated technologies such as energetic devices for land, sea, air and space applications.

"EaglePicher has a long history of development expertise within our specific business units," said Steve Westfall, president of EaglePicher Technologies. "Establishing this dedicated R&D facility allows us to leverage our strong engineering talent at one central location, bringing increased innovation and efficiency to our customers."

The dedicated technical team will work with project managers, engineers and quality assurance groups across EaglePicher Technologies to identify development opportunities for primary, secondary and reserve batteries, as well as energetic device technologies. The team will also evaluate emerging technologies such as ultracapacitators and fuel cell applications and explore the incorporate of nano-technology and nano-materials into new and existing products.

"Having a stand-alone research and development effort helps insure that we have the very best technologies available to our customers now, and that we are investing in the right technologies for the future," said Viet Vu, vice president of technology. "It also helps us make objective decisions quickly to keep EaglePicher competitive within the industry."

The decision to locate the new R&D center within EaglePicher Technologies' Joplin, Mo., campus was in part a result of the Missouri Legislature's passage of a bill extending the Quality Jobs Program.
