Absolute Software's ComputraceOne Helps European Organisations Fight Computer Crime

VANCOUVER, and NEWBURY, UK, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Absolute Software Corporation (TSX: ABT) ("Absolute", or the "Company"), the leading provider of firmware-based, patented Computrace(R) Computer Theft Recovery, Data Protection and Secure Asset Tracking(TM) today announced several recent incidents where its European computer tracking service ComputraceOne(TM) recovered stolen computers and helped organisations fight computer crime.

Absolute's European product, ComputraceOne, uses the Internet to track and recover missing laptop computers. When a Computrace-equipped computer is reported stolen, the embedded Computrace agent sends a silent signal to Absolute's Monitoring Centre - providing critical location information. Absolute's Recovery Team then works with the law enforcement organization that has jurisdiction over the matter, to recover the computer. With support installed in the BIOS(1) during manufacture by the world's leading computer manufacturers, the Computrace software agent can survive accidental or deliberate attempts at removal or disablement.

The experience of Wokingham-headquartered BRC Reinforcement Solutions is typical of Absolute customers:

To combat the possibility of computer theft, the 400-employee manufacturer purchased the ComputraceOne monitoring service to track its laptops. The company was relieved that they were protected when thieves made off with a computer during an overnight burglary. Soon after, the stolen computer called home to the Absolute Monitoring Centre to indicate its location. The Absolute Recovery Team then worked with local police to retrieve the laptop and have now charged two alleged thieves.

Other recent examples of computer recoveries for Absolute's European customers include:

Independent Television News, UK - In two unrelated crimes, one laptop was stolen from a staff member's car and another was lost when one of the television network's employees experienced a home burglary. Both computers have been located and the details handed over to the police - resulting in charges being brought against the alleged thieves.

Ovre Eiker Kommune, Norway - Twelve laptops were stolen during an overnight burglary at the school. By working with local police, Absolute's Recovery team has retrieved all twelve computers and several alleged thieves are now facing charges.

Eiker Videregaende Skole, Norway - When a laptop was stolen from a teacher's classroom in a brazen mid-day robbery, school officials were thankful that the computer was protected by ComputraceOne. Using location information transmitted from the laptop, local police recovered the laptop and apprehended the alleged thief who claimed they had innocently purchased it from "a guy in Drammen". He has been charged with handling stolen goods.
