AT&T Helps Republic Services Improve Waste Collection and Disposal Services Across the Country With Network Services

Posted on: Thursday, 15 November 2007, 12:00 CST

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. today announced a five-year $1.3 million contract with Republic Services Inc., one of the nation's leading providers of solid-waste collection, transfer and disposal services. AT&T will provide Republic Services with Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) ring service, ensuring state-of-the-art, self-healing network architecture that protects critical applications from being disrupted or degraded in quality because of loss of signal or transmission impairment.

The SONET ring system will provide alternate circuits for communications in the event of a network disruption and ensure that Republic Services can continue business operations. Even if the SONET fiber is cut, the ring architecture secures a reverse path of data transport, so information can take an alternate route for the fastest delivery of communications.

If Republic Services were to lose network connectivity, dump operations and waste deliveries at transfer stations would be delayed significantly. Republic Services transfers large quantities of data while running its waste-management business, in addition to moving data for billing, payroll and many other internal programs.

"Republic Services needs to be connected 24/7 in order to maintain waste collection and disposal for communities across America; we required more redundancy and more bandwidth to keep up with our business," said Bill Halnon, chief information officer, Republic Services Inc. "In addition to establishing greater network security for our operations, the AT&T SONET ring solution will connect Republic Services data centers across the country with more flexible routing and higher bandwidth."

Enhanced productivity was also a key element of this contract. Republic Services brings in revenue by moving waste. Having fast, reliable network services helps the company process truck transports and weigh garbage more efficiently so that billing can proceed quickly and securely.

AT&T already provides Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)-enabled network services to 246 Republic Services sites across the nation. The new AT&T solution will also incorporate Republic Services' new corporate headquarters, which is currently under construction in Sunrise, Fla.
