Power-Over-Ethernet Ports Exceed One in Five Shipments, According to Dell'Oro Group
Posted on: Monday, 19 November 2007, 09:00 CST
A market research report from Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, reveals that Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) port shipments in the third quarter of this year comprised over 20 percent of worldwide Ethernet switch port shipments. This strong growth in PoE shipments was attributed to robust shipments of Gigabit Ethernet PoE ports that increased almost 80 percent when compared to the same quarter last year.
"As we saw in the third quarter, Enterprises are purchasing Gigabit PoE at a faster rate as they expand the features offered on their networks to be able to take advantage of a converged voice and data network and are future proofing for speed as the price premium for Gigabit PoE continues to decline," commented Alan Weckel, Senior Analyst of Ethernet Switch and IP Telephony Enterprise research at Dell'Oro Group. "Cisco and Nortel, leaders in sales of IP Phones that are the main device driving PoE deployments, both contributed to the record PoE shipments in the third quarter," added Weckel.
Robust Smart/Web Managed switch port growth helped drive the overall market to its seventeenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Smart/Web Managed switches include some basic management features, while maintaining very aggressive price points.
