Qualcomm Wins a Patent Lawsuit Filed By Nokia

Wireless telecommunications company Qualcomm has won a patent lawsuit against Nokia, as reported by Reuters. US trade court has discarded a lawsuit filed by Nokia asking for certain Qualcomm's chips used in cell phones to be barred from the US.
According to Nokia, the chipset from Qualcomm infringes with its patented technology that made its telephones smaller and more efficient. The US International Trade Commission dropped the Nokia lawsuit due to pending arbitration.
"This ruling highlight that one should view Nokia's fundamental theory of exhaustion with a significant degree of skepticism," said Don Rosenberg, executive vice president and general counsel at Qualcomm. "It is obvious that Nokia was trying to weaken Qualcomm's position in our licensing negotiations and they failed." As reported by bend Weekly.
On similar grounds, a lawsuit was dismissed by German regional court on October 23, 2007, in which Nokia filed a complaint against Qualcomm's patents.
There are more than a dozen lawsuits pending between Nokia and Qualcomm on three continents. Qualcomm had filed multiple GSM related patent lawsuits against Nokia between November 2005 and April 2007. Nokia also filed cases against Qualcomm patents in Europe and the US.
In addition to the litigation with Nokia, Qualcomm is facing broadband communications company Broadcom in four court cases in the US.
