SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc. today announced that the Marysville Exempted Village School District (Marysville Schools) of Ohio has selected Extreme Networks(R) for a new district-wide high-speed wireless and edge infrastructure upgrade supporting anytime, anywhere computing.
Marysville Schools, with approximately 6,000 students and staff, is upgrading its district-wide network infrastructure to improve student performance and communications quality. With these objectives, the district's IT staff set out to enhance bandwidth for voice streaming, faster downloads from educational databases, and to have a network foundation in place supporting advanced distance and e-learning capabilities.
The team thoroughly evaluated infrastructure solutions and concluded that Extreme Networks solutions, including its Summit(R) X450 switches, Summit WM 200 Wireless LAN controller and Altitude(TM) 350-2 access points offered the scalability and flexibility required in their fast changing wireless environment.
"Our ultimate goal was to create an anytime, anywhere learning environment that meets our goals of quality communications and higher performing students in the classroom," said James Moots, director of technology at Marysville Exempted Village School District. "A high-performance wired and wireless LAN infrastructure is essential to meeting the ever-growing research and technology needs of our district. We're very satisfied with Extreme Networks solution, giving us the right combination of advanced functionality, affordable pricing and outstanding service through the entire process."
The high-performance network enables the district to participate in advanced educational applications, including the Jason Project (http://www.jason.org/), an international distance-learning and telepresence program for K -12 schools that aims to engage students in science and technology by providing students opportunities to join real expeditions without leaving their classrooms. Marysville Schools' new network infrastructure delivers Jason Project's bandwidth intensive curriculum through videos, podcasts, Web casts, live chat sessions, and interactive computer simulations.
The primary design and implementation of the network was performed in conjunction with North America Communications Resource (NACR), a value added solutions provider that offers comprehensive communications systems and support. In addition to the network design and implementation, Extreme Networks worked with NACR for troubleshooting of the network as well as training of IT staff for efficient on-going management and administration.
The new network infrastructure solves the district's current application challenges while also creating a foundation for future network convergence across Marysville School's 10 schools and multiple administration buildings. Marysville Schools has set the foundation for a future deployment of Voice over IP (VoIP) handsets on a wide scale. The staff deployed Extreme Networks Summit X450 edge switches to enable the large scale rollout of a converged network featuring standards-based Power over Ethernet at the edge.
"The requirement for a high performance converged networks that supports both wired and wireless connectivity continues to grow within the education market," said Paul Hooper, chief marketing officer for Extreme Networks. "Our work with the Marysville Schools further demonstrates Extreme Networks ability to provide campus environments with a scalable and secure network solution that meets emerging requirements both on time and within budget."
