CMD Introduces Two ESD Protection Products

Semiconductor manufacturer California Micro Devices has introduced PicoGuard CM1263 and Centurion CM1248, two new electrostatic discharge protection product families for high speed data interfaces in advanced handsets.

According to the company, these products deliver electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection with signal integrity in space saving, low profile packages, and expand its product portfolio for mobile handsets.

California Micro Devices (CMD) said that the CM1263 family is based on its PicoGuard line of low capacitance ESD protection products and provides protection and signal integrity for the high speed serial data interfaces that are used for display, imager and data ports. It also offers designers layout flexibility with both two and six channel configurations. The two channel CM1263-02SE is offered in a small form factor SOT-563 package. The six channel CM1263-06DE is offered in a 0.4mm pitch uDFN package.

The CM1248 family is based on CMD's Centurion process technology and provides ESD protection and signal integrity for high speed data interfaces for memory and media cards. The company claims that it is offered in multiple channel configurations with compact packages, which occupy 50% less board space than any other offering.

The two products protect the handset against ESD strikes of up to ±8kV and ±18kV contact discharge, respectively, as per the IEC61000-4-2 level 4 standard.

CMD added that the need for ESD protection is increasing because advanced handset designs feature high resolution color displays, imagers, high speed external data ports, removable memory and media cards. Hence, handset designers are employing several high speed serial interface standards such as mobile display digital interface to achieve high bandwidth, lower power, reduced electromagnetic interference and smaller form factors for interface cables and connectors.

The sample pricing for the CM1263 family and CM1248 family is $0.12-0.22 and $0.10-0.20 each, respectively, at 1,000 unit quantities. All products are restriction of hazardous substances directive compliant and will be mass produced in the first quarter of 2008.

In September 2007, CMD's rival NEC Electronics introduced on-chip ESD protection for 45-nm high-speed communications IC's.
