TI Enables Longer Battery Life and Clearer Audio Quality for Cell Phones With New High-Efficiency Stereo Class-D Audio Power Amplifier
Posted on: Thursday, 6 January 2005, 12:00 CST
DALLAS, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) introduced today a high-performance, filter-free stereo Class-D audio power amplifier that enables designers of cell phones to develop audio-rich products, while maximizing talk time and audio quality. With about two-thirds lower quiescent current and 80 percent lower noise floor than its nearest competitor, the TPA2012D2 packs high efficiency and audio quality in a tiny package, enabling the features and form factors consumers demand. The device is also ideal for personal digital assistants (PDAs), notebook computers, portable DVD players and other types of portable audio equipment. (See http://www.ti.com/sc05007 for more information.)
"As consumer desire for audio-rich features like polyphonic ring-tones, MP3 music, streaming video with audio and 3-D surround-sound effects drives demand for stereo cell phones, manufacturers require two-channel, high- efficiency Class-D amplifiers to satisfy the demand without draining the battery," said Art George, vice president of TI's high-performance linear business. "With understanding of market trends and state-of-the-art Class-D audio power amplifier and packaging technology, TI is able to provide a tiny solution tailor-made for these applications."
The 2.1-W stereo Class-D audio power amplifier is currently available in a 4 mm x 4 mm ThinQFN (quad flat no-lead) package and is sampling in TI's state- of-the-art Lead (Pb)-Free 2.0 mm x 2.0 mm Wafer Chip Scale Package (WCSP), enabling designers to maximize space in handheld devices. Operating from a 3.3-V supply, the TPA2012D2 draws a mere 6 mA of supply current and has an A-weighted noise floor of 27 uVRMS, well below the level detectable to the human ear. This enables more audio features, clearer sound and efficient battery use. The device needs only two external components for correct operation and was designed for maximum system flexibility, offering four gain select options and independent channel shutdown.
The new amplifier complements TI's OMAP processors, the premier platform for enabling cutting-edge, mobile entertainment applications such as MP3 and video streaming, as well as TI's digital signal processor-based solutions for portable audio players, offering manufacturers a suite of application- optimized products.
Available Today
The TPA2012D2 is available now in a Pb-Free ThinQFN package from TI and its authorized distributors. Suggested resale pricing in quantities of 1,000 is $0.95. The device in a Pb-Free WCSP is sampling now and is expected to be available in volume in March 2005, priced at $1.05 in 1,000-unit quantities. An evaluation module (EVM) will be available in 1Q05.
