LOS ANGELES, Dec. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — The AT&T Foundation, the corporate philanthropy organization of AT&T Inc. , today announced more than $375,000 in grants to support 30 nonprofit organizations in the Greater Los Angeles area through the AT&T Excelerator competitive technology grant program.

The program helps nonprofits integrate technology into their operations and community outreach and also places technology tools in the hands of underserved populations. In addition, the grants provide resources such as education programs, Internet access, computer training and job-skills development.

This year’s Los Angeles-area Excelerator grant funding includes $25,000 to expand and upgrade the Los Angeles Urban League’s Web site. The organization serves thousands of adults and children each year and works to empower the African-American and other minority communities through advocacy activities and community service programs.

This Web site expansion will include adding an interactive Web-based application to move a variety of activities online, such as membership and special event registration, volunteer recruitment and online fundraising.

“Expanding and upgrading the Web site and our technological infrastructure will help us in a number of key ways,” explained Blair Taylor, president and CEO of the Los Angeles Urban League. “With this support from AT&T, we’ll be able to reach more clients online, promote and solicit membership, mount fundraising programs and conduct Internet-based advocacy surveys with immediate feedback. We’re excited about all the new opportunities this technology will give us.”

The Web site upgrades will allow the organization to communicate more effectively with clients and stakeholders through new outreach activities and will also strengthen the organization’s ability to receive information, generate data and results and respond to feedback from the community on advocacy issues.

“Technology plays a vital role in the success of nonprofit organizations,” said Denita Willoughby, AT&T vice president of External Affairs – Los Angeles. “I’m proud that funding from AT&T can help the Los Angeles Urban League empower the communities it serves through enhanced Web communication and interactive applications that engage new supporters.”

Other Los Angeles-area organizations receiving this year’s AT&T Excelerator technology grants include Boys & Girls Club of Carson, Burbank Housing Corp., Culver City Education Foundation, Los Angeles City Workforce Investment Board and the Ocean Park Community Center.

Since 2002, the AT&T Excelerator program has provided more than 2,500 technology grants — totaling more than $47.8 million — to organizations across the country. In 2007, AT&T awarded $9 million in Excelerator technology grants to 680 nonprofit organizations across the country.

In 2006, AT&T Inc. and the AT&T Foundation contributed more than $101 million to nonprofit organizations across the country. With its strong giving record, the AT&T Foundation ranks among the most generous corporate foundations in the United States.
