Japan Computer Makers Offer Help in Emergencies

Posted on: Thursday, 4 September 2003, 06:00 CDT

Tokyo, Sept. 4 (Jiji Press)--Computer and computer software makers in Japan have begun in earnest to offer companies assistance in recovering their information data in case of terror attacks and natural disasters.

IBM Japan Ltd. and NS Solutions Corp. , for instance, have developed a computer system for storing copies of important data in a manner by which they can be quickly retrieved in times of emergency.

Usually, it is a time-consuming process for companies to reconfirm and recover massive amounts of data that they hold for business transactions when computer systems are damaged by terror attacks, earthquakes or blackouts, even if the systems themselves are replaced by new ones.

Instead of using conventional data storage magnetic tapes, IBM Japan and NS Solutions have come up with a method of connecting a number of computer storage systems through optical lines to store a large amount of data that are being updated all the time.

Hitachi Ltd. has received more than 100 customer orders or inquiries for a similar service and has accordingly increased the number of its technological and marketing staff.

NEC Corp. and Nihon Unisys Ltd. , likewise, have begun experiments on high-speed data communications by connecting core computers with remote storage systems.
