Japan Computer Makers Release Servers with "Itanium 2" MPU

Tokyo, July 1 (Jiji Press)--Major computer makers in Japan on Tuesday started sales of computer servers equipped with the latest version of Intel Corp.'s 64-bit "Itanium 2" microprocessor unit.
The companies launching new servers are NEC Corp. , Hewlett- Packard Japan Ltd., IBM Japan Ltd., Hitachi Ltd. , Oki Electric Industry Co. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. .
Compared with the previous version of Itanium 2, the latest one features about 30-50 pct higher performance.
IBM Japan's xSeries 450 model, equipped with four Itanium 2 MPUs, has a price tag of 6 million to 9.5 million yen.
