Emergency medical services software provider EMSystem has agreed to acquire California-based Vital Technology Data's electronic patient care record technology, news website JSOnline has reported.
According to EMSystem, this technology is used by ambulance drivers to document their patient care. Under the terms of the agreement, EMSystem will integrate into its system a personal health record program that Vital Technology will sell to its consumers.
Andrew Nunemaker, chief executive at EMSystem said that the software is used by governmental entities to track patients and make the ambulance routing efficient. It was also used during Hurricane Katrina.
EMSystem said that the addition of the software will increase its presence in the emergency medical services market through customers such as private ambulance companies and firehouses that want to move from a paper-based documentation system to an electronic system.
Mr Nunemaker claimed that EMSystem has a 35% share of the resource management market and a 15% share of the patient-tracking market, while the next biggest competitor in each category has just a 5% share.
This is the company's first acquisition after its management-led buyout in October 2007.
