Google to Enter Wikipedia's Terrain With New Project Knol

Posted on: Tuesday, 18 December 2007, 12:00 CST

Google has announced a new project, Knol, aimed at collecting and organizing user-generated information in all fields of knowledge. Knol is Google's attempt to enter the territory of Wikipedia, an open-access encyclopedia project.

Knol is currently confined to a limited test. The purpose of the new service is to enable users pen a web page about any topic of their wish and get it indexed by Google and other search engines.

Keeping in mind the various issues that crept from Wikipedia's inconsistencies, Google intends to reveal the writer's identity and put an end to all forms of collective editing of any page. The company would encourage rival notes on all topics.

Google also said that with the author's permission, it plans to put up ads on the web pages. The revenue generated from these ads would be shared with the authors.

The Financial Times has quoted Udi Manber, a Google engineer, as saying: "The key idea behind the Knol project is to highlight authors."
