Quanta to Set Up Plant in Vietnam

Manufacturer of laptops for other companies Quanta Computer has announced its plans to set up a new plant for assembling notebook PCs in Vietnam.

The company’s Vietnam facility will start production in the second half of 2008. The new plant will be its second overseas base for assembling PCs, with the first one in China’s Songjiang. In 2005, Quanta moved its manufacturing operations from Taiwan to Shanghai.

According to EMSNow.com, Quanta has the largest share of 34% in the global market for outsourced PCs and its move to build its plant in Vietnam is expected to drive Taiwan’s electronic suppliers to broaden their operation deployment to Southeast Asia from currently southern China.

Recently, Hon Hai Group announced plans to invest $5 billion to construct a large-sized technology park in Taiwan. Also, Compal Electronics, a contract supplier of notebook PCs, has decided to invest $500 million in building an industrial park for assembling outsourced notebook PCs in Taiwan.
