BEIJING, Jan. 9 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ — Youku.com, the leading online video sharing website in China, today announced that it has surpassed two significant web traffic milestones, including registering more than 100 million daily video views during the week ending December 16, 2007. Youku had more than 12 million daily unique visitors in that week, according to a report by Internet media and market research firm Nielsen/NetRatings.

The Nielsen/NetRatings SiteCensus statistics confirm that Youku has become one of the fastest growing websites in China. It has achieved a 20-fold increase in its daily video views and daily unique visitors since its formal launch in December 2006, and an increase of 30 million daily video views since October 2007 alone.

“We are excited that Youku.com has reached these important traffic milestones. We have exceeded our earlier forecast that our daily video views would reach 100 million by later in 2008,” said Victor Koo, Founder and CEO of Youku.com. “When YouTube was acquired by Google in October 2006, its daily video views had just exceeded 100 million. The progress of Youku indicates that online video has quickly become a mainstream application for users in China, just as it has in the U.S.”

A trend that is driving the popularity of online video sites in many parts of the world — including in China — is strong demand for user-generated and time-sensitive content that is relevant to people’s lives and interesting to watch. The Chinese media industry in particular is a highly fragmented space, and media companies, including provincial TV stations, increasingly cooperate with efficient and reliable content distribution platforms to reach a broad national audience. The advanced proprietary technology and fastest download speed offered by Youku delivers content in a timely fashion and provides viewers with easy access to information.

“The power of this trend has been illustrated in user response to a number of special Youku events and seasonal celebrations,” added Koo, who was formerly President of Sohu.com. “Our ‘A Day in the Life of China’ promotion attracted video submissions from across the country portraying events in the daily life of people. Youku also experienced lots of video posting and sharing around August 8, the start of the one year countdown to the 2008 Olympics, and also with travel videos surrounding the National Day holidays.”

Youku is the leading destination for Chinese people to watch and share short-form videos all over the world. With a broad base of mainstream users and demographics that are attractive to advertisers and agencies, Youku has provided interactive marketing solutions to clients such as Dell, Samsung, Shanda, Ford Motors, AMD, Hewlett Packard and Giant Interactive,

Youku has successfully completed 3 rounds of venture financing totaling US $40 million as of November 2007, including financing from world-class investment institutions Brookside Capital, an affiliate of Bain Capital, Sutter Hill Ventures, Farallon Capital and Chengwei Ventures.
