The Public Utility Commission of Texas Selects Advanced Network With Secure Edge Technology From Extreme Networks

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc. today announced that it was selected by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) to provide an advanced and cost-effective network infrastructure, featuring leading-edge network access control (NAC) security and resilient, scalable Ethernet switching functionality. The complete wired and wireless solution is designed to address the agency's critical needs, including the ability to provide a responsive network for staff as well as visitors with flexibility and value.
The PUC, based in Austin, regulates the electricity and telephone industries in Texas, protects customers, fosters competition, and promotes high quality infrastructure. The PUC oversees a variety of issues including energy efficiency, state managed "do not call" lists and other issues related to electricity and telecommunications markets.
To help keep its computing systems available, protected from harmful viruses, and to enable its IT staff to support differing types of users, connections and application requirements, the PUC selected an end-to-end network infrastructure from Extreme Networks. The scalable core features Extreme Networks BlackDiamond(R) 8800 modular switch and versatile Summit(R) 10/100 switches at the edge. The network provides a single solution for wired and wireless applications and services.
Network security was one of the key concerns for the PUC. Once the new LAN was built, they selected Extreme Networks Sentriant(TM) AG, a leading network access control solution supporting advanced end point integrity checking, to help ensure that edge devices and users entering the network are up-to-date with anti-virus software. Sentriant AG is configured to support secure access for users entering the network, with different policies guarding an open wireless network for visitors and contractors and a secure wired network for its employees.
The Sentriant AG makes for an ideal edge security solution for this mid- size network, as it can perform hundreds of up-to-date security checks, fast testing taking only seconds, support for both Windows and Mac endpoints as well as multiple testing options including a completely agent-less solution.
"Our needs range from applications such as custom-built workflow processes and Sequel databases to supporting an extensive consumer website and wireless LAN connectivity for visitors," said Jim Albright, Chief Information Officer of the PUC. "Thus, we needed a secure, intelligent and responsive network and the Extreme Networks solution has come through for us at many levels, giving us the confidence that our needs are met both today and going forward."
Tying the network together is Extreme Networks EPICenter(R) management suite, a comprehensive management solution providing a unified view of connected devices and making common tasks both intuitive and simple.
"Extreme Networks is providing government organizations with solutions that are both feature-rich and right sized for their needs and budget," said Paul Hooper, chief marketing officer for Extreme Networks, Inc. "By going with Extreme Networks, the PUC benefits from having the flexibility to support many applications while gaining the advanced security features required to protect users and devices while being well integrated with the network."
