Michael Rose, IDC Virtualization Expert, Offers Insights into Virtual Client Computing
Posted on: Monday, 14 January 2008, 09:00 CST
Desktone, Inc., provider of the first virtual client computing platform that enables desktops as a service, today announced the availability of an exclusive podcast with Michael Rose, associate research analyst for IDC's Enterprise Virtualization Software program. Rose provides insights into the Virtual Client Computing Taxonomy report he recently published, including key virtualization and delivery methods, and guidance to organizations considering virtual client computing (VCC).
Rose has identified three types of virtualization software for VCC: application, user session and desktop, namely client-hosted and server-hosted desktops. He notes that server-hosted desktops are leading to the concept of desktops as a service. "One of the most interesting use cases of server-hosted desktop virtualization is a services model. If you can host desktops virtually aboard server hardware, why not host it somewhere that already has the infrastructure and data center capacity, such as a telco?" Rose said. "This idea of desktops as a service is gaining a lot of interest in the market. IDC believes it is very valid model; the technologies are coming together and I expect it will gain in adoption."
"Michael has unique insights into what comprises virtual client computing and how a growing ecosystem of virtualization and delivery technologies is enabling the industry to move from a distributed environment towards a more effective centralized infrastructure," said Jeff Fisher, moderator of the Desktops as a Service blog where Rose's podcast is posted, and Senior Director of Strategic Development at Desktone. "I'm pleased we can help IT professionals learn more about virtual client computing and desktops as a service from such a highly regarded expert."
Fisher's podcast with Rose covers:
The definition and driving factors for VCC
Three types of VCC virtualization software: application, user session and desktop
How server-hosted desktops leads to desktops as a service, where IT is increasingly becoming a service provider to the organization.
Two delivery models for VCC: remote interaction and remote streaming
