IMC Networks Announces New Compact SFP-Ready Fiber Mode Converter

Posted on: Wednesday, 16 January 2008, 09:00 CST

IMC Networks, a leading manufacturer of optical access solutions and media converters for local and wide-area networks, announced the release of the IE-ModeConverter - a compact, highly-flexible fiber optic mode converter.

Fiber optic network engineers often have to combine network segments and devices operating with different fiber modes or wavelengths. The IE-ModeConverter allows operators to mix and match these segments quickly and economically.

The IE-ModeConverter offers two Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) ports for two same-speed SFP modules. SFPs are compact optical transceivers which function as modular connectors, allowing operators to change fiber modes and wavelengths by simply changing the SFP, rather than replacing the entire mode converter. This future-friendly architecture is an economical alternative to having to purchase a variety of costly "fixed-mode" converters. Customers can select a pair of same-speed SFPs operating at rates ranging from 10Mbps to 2.4Gbps.

"An ideal application for the IE-ModeConverter is when network engineers have expensive equipment with fixed ports designed for short range multi-mode fiber, but they need to connect to longer range single-mode fiber," said Tim Templeton, Director of Marketing at IMC Networks. "The IE-ModeConverter is a cost-effective alternative to upgrading the equipment or buying new expensive fiber blades."

The IE-ModeConverter operates in extended temperature environments (-35 degrees Celsius to 70 degrees Celsius) often required for installations in manufacturing facilities, outside building premises or other areas where extreme temperatures pose a concern. The "IE" name signifies that the IE-ModeConverter belongs to IMC Networks' line of Industrial Equipment devices built for demanding environments.

The IE-ModeConverter also has flexible powering options, offering AC operation with an optional AC adaptor, or with DC power via a built-in 7 to 50VDC powering block. The DC power can be daisy-chained, and the included DIN rail clip is a convenient mounting option. For higher density deployments, up to 18 IE-ModeConverters can be easily mounted in an 18-slot IE-PowerTray chassis.

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

IMC Networks' IE-ModeConverters are available through IMC Networks' distribution channel. List pricing starts at $210, for the IE-ModeConverter without the AC adapter. The IE-ModeConverter requires two same-speed MSA-compliant SFP modules, also available from IMC Networks.
